Paganism & Witchcraft

Paganism

These are just a few common definitions:

  • Any religion not of Abrahamic origin. So anything other than Christianity, Islam, or Judaism
  • An umbrella term for nature-worshipping religions
  • A nature-based religion that is usually polytheistic (multiple gods/goddesses)

Witchcraft

Some basic definitions include:

  • the magical manipulation to bring about change
  • practice involving magic and affinity with nature, usually within a pagan tradition

How are the two related?

This question is a bit complicated. The two do NOT need to be used together. Some pagans don't practice witchcraft, just as there are witches who don't practice paganism or maybe even spirituality in general. My husband likes the magic side of things without focusing on spirituality/deities.

However, a lot of people seem to use both of these together. Remember that there is NO right or wrong way. If you want to use both, or you feel called to do so, use both. If you feel called to only use one,  use only one. You're not wrong just because others might do it differently.

With this in mind, a lot use paganism and witchcraft together. I think this is because both seem to work off each other to get better results, at least if you're called to use both. If using both isn't right for you, then you're not gonna get better results using both.

Some people use both paganism and witchcraft to worship their gods. For example, Hecate, Freyja, and Nephthys are goddesses associated with magic. So followers of those goddesses might use witchcraft to honor or worship their deity.

There's also shadow work and enlightenment in various paths. I could make an entire post about that, so I won't go into detail. But shadow work and enlightenment are learning about yourself, the world, and the spiritual. A lot of people who work on these things, at least in our community, use paganism and witchcraft to enhance their growth.
